Adaptation.
They have a think layer of blubber to store enegery and retain body heat. They once had external ears but have lost them, while the inner ear has changed to detect sounds underwater over long distances. This works with their echolocation which can determine the size shape and distance of an object underwater. They also have greasy tears in their eyes to protect them from the salt water.
